Chapter 1 - The Closed Door

The mahogany dining doors clicked shut with the finality of a prison cell. Julian stood like carved granite, his three-piece suit unyielding against the suffocating warmth of the chandelier above. Behind his tailored trouser leg, six-year-old Lily trembled, her small fingers burrowed into the expensive wool fabric. Her dark eyes remained locked on Claire, whose chest heaved against the boning of her ivory gown.

"Julian, you cannot possibly entertain the babblings of a frightened child over your fiancée," Claire hissed, her voice dipping into an octave of theatrical disbelief. She smoothed her hands over the table linen, yet her knuckles remained bloodless and white. "My diamond engagement ring is gone. It vanished from my vanity an hour ago. She is deflecting to protect herself from punishment."

Eleanor sat motionless at the end of the table, her silver hair catching the amber glow. Her tea cup rattled against its saucer—a frail, deliberate tremor. She did not look at Claire. Her faded gaze was pinned to Julian, her son, whose jaw worked silently under his skin.

"Lily doesn't lie, Claire," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. "She never has. You claimed my mother’s portrait was safe in the gallery, yet Lily says she watched you corner her with it."

"I was merely hanging it back in its alcove!" Claire took a step back, her ivory skirts whispering loudly against the mahogany parquet. "Eleanor has been wandering in her confusion again. I was keeping the family relics safe! If you doubt my integrity, search my quarters. Search every inch!"

Julian didn't blink. He lowered his broad hand to Lily’s shoulder, feeling the rapid, rabbit-like beat of her pulse. "Show me the frame, Claire. Show me where Eleanor’s photo sits right now."

Claire’s breath hitched, her manicured fingers grazing the diamond pendant at her throat. Just as she opened her mouth to parry the demand, the grandfather clock in the corner struck eight, and from the deep pocket of Claire's designer cloak draped over the nearby sideboard, a sharp, metallic ring resonated against the hardwood floor.
