Chapter 5 - A Father’s Gambit

The sight of the gun barrel aimed at his child turned Arthur's blood to ice, followed by a surge of white-hot adrenaline that sharpened every sense in his body. The ambient hum of the chandelier, the rain lashing the open terrace, the ragged breathing of his resurrected brother—everything faded into the background. Only the black hole of the revolver’s barrel remained.

"Claire," Arthur said, his voice terrifyingly calm, devoid of any tremble. "The key is right here. Look at it."

He slowly withdrew the serpentine brass key from his waistcoat pocket, holding it between his thumb and forefinger where the light could catch its intricate, polished curves. He took a half-step forward, angling his body to completely shield Lily from her line of sight. Behind him, Lily was weeping silently, her tiny fingers digging into the fabric of his trousers.

"Don't move another inch!" Claire shrieked, her knuckles whitening on the grip of the small pistol. "Put it on the table and push it toward me! Now!"

Julian, lingering near the dripping curtains, shifted his weight. His eyes flicked to Arthur, exchanging an unspoken, lifelong language between brothers. Despite six years of estrangement and presumed death, the Sterling blood understood itself.

"The key is useless to you without the combination to the inner mechanism," Julian spoke up, his rough voice distracting Claire for a fraction of a second. "You know father’s vaults. You turn that key without disarming the pins, and the internal cylinders shear off. The documents burn automatically with the phosphorus vials inside."

Claire’s eyes darted toward Julian, panic flickering behind her venomous glare. "Shut up! You're lying to save her!"

"He's not lying," Eleanor’s voice chimed in from the edge of the table. The elderly woman had not moved, but her frail hands now rested flat against the wood. "Marcus designed it to keep thieves out. You studied our archives, Claire, but you never understood the Sterling blood. It takes two keys. And two people."

"Shut up, old woman!" Claire screamed, the gun wavering slightly between Arthur and Eleanor.

That microsecond of distraction was all Arthur needed. With explosive power, he swung his arm—not at Claire, but downward, slamming the heavy iron poker across the crystal decanter on the sideboard. The heavy lead crystal exploded in a deafening shower of glass and amber liquor, sending shards flying through the air.

Claire flinched instinctively, shielding her face with her off-hand, and pulled the trigger.

BANG.

The gunshot deafened the enclosed room, the bullet shattering the high chandelier above. Glass rained down like diamond hail as half the room plunged into darkness. Arthur lunged forward through the shadows like a predator unleashed.
