Chapter 2 - The Velvet Lining

The metallic clang seemed to echo into eternity. Julian stepped forward, his leather shoes cutting across the Persian rug with predatory precision. He reached down and retrieved the object from beside the sideboard: a heavy silver picture frame, shattered across its glass face. Beneath the cracked lattice lay the sepia-toned portrait of Eleanor in her youth.

"You dropped this," Julian whispered, holding the fractured heirloom between them.

Claire backed against the dining credenza, her eyes darting toward the closed double doors. "It must have fallen. I told you, I was moving it! Someone must have slipped it into my coat to frame me!"

"Look at the backing, Julian," Eleanor murmured from the table. The elderly matriarch finally lifted her chin, her milky eyes flashing with long-buried lucidity. "Look where the velvet meets the wood."

Julian turned the heavy frame over. The dark velvet seal had been violently slit with a razor. Nestled inside the hollowed compartment behind his mother’s photograph was not a missing diamond ring, but a thin, folded document stamped with an embossed red wax insignia: the crest of the Sterling family trust, legally nullifying Claire’s prospective rights to the estate upon marriage.

"You weren't looking for a missing ring," Julian said, his dark eyes hardening into frozen lakes. "You were hunting for my father's original codicil."

Claire laughed—a brittle, ragged sound that stripped away the last veneer of aristocratic poise. "Your father was out of his mind when he drafted that clause. He wanted to leave half this dynasty to a child who doesn't even share your blood!"

Julian froze, his hand tightening around the frame until the fractured glass bit into his palm. "What did you just say?"
