Chapter 15 - The New Dawn

"It's over, Arthur," Julian said, his gun never wavering from Ward’s chest. "The board knows. The SEC has your transactions. You're a beggar and a fugitive."
Ward looked past Julian to the green monitor behind Marcus, where rows of red confirmation text rolled continuously: TRANSMISSION CONFIRMED. AUTHORITIES DISPATCHED.
"No..." Ward whispered, his hand trembling as he lifted the revolver toward Julian's head. "I spent forty years building this empire! I won't let an imposter and a bastard child strip it from me!"
Ward’s finger began to squeeze the trigger.
Before the hammer could fall, Marcus fired. The blast echoed like a cannon in the confined concrete space. Arthur Ward was thrown backward through the ruptured doorway, his body collapsing against the shattered wine racks outside.
Silence crashed back into the bunker, heavy, absolute, and sweet with the smell of ozone.
From above, the faint, wailing crescendo of state police sirens cut through the dying storm. Julian lowered his weapon. He took a long, ragged breath, feeling the heavy burden of forty years of lies slip away from his shoulders like water.
He walked over to the gun safe, gently lifting Lily into his arms. The little girl wrapped her arms tightly around his neck, burying her face against his collar. Eleanor stood up, smoothing her silk blouse, and stepped beside Marcus, taking her eldest son's hand in hers.
Claire remained curled on the cold floor, sobbing silently into the ruined hem of her ivory dress, completely unnoticed as the Sterling family walked toward the light.
Julian carried his daughter up the broken stone steps, emerging through the wreckage of the dining room into the dawn. Rain washed over the shattered windows, and the first golden rays of sunlight broke through the dark clouds over the estate gardens.

Lily lifted her head, looking out at the sun. "Is it over, Daddy?"
Julian held her closer, looking at his brother and his mother standing beside him in the morning light. "Yes, Lily," he said, his voice full of an unbreakable strength. "It's finally morning."
