Chapter 4 - The Drowned Man’s Truth

The air in the room grew colder, thick with the smell of wet earth and ancient betrayal. Julian took a single, heavy step forward, his boots squelching against the wet rug. He didn't look dead, but he looked ruined. His cheeks were hollowed, his skin possessed the pallor of someone kept away from the sun for years, and his dark eyes burned with an unnatural, feverish intensity.

"You saw the car sink because you cut the brake lines on the ridge, Claire," Julian said, each word dropping like lead into the frozen dining room.

Arthur felt the world tilt beneath his feet. He looked at Claire, whose chest heaved as she backed away until she hit the marble mantelpiece. Her eyes were wild, darting desperately between the locked interior door and the open terrace. "He's lying! Arthur, look at him! He's insane, he's returned to extort us! He was in debt to half the underground bookies in the county!"

"I was in debt because you set the ledger traps in my name," Julian countered, never breaking his stare. He slowly raised an arm, water dripping from his soaked cuff, and pointed directly at the envelope Arthur had tucked into his pocket. "Read the letter, Arthur. Don't take my word for it. Read what our dear father discovered before he died. Read why she came into this family in the first place."

Arthur’s heart hammered against his ribs. He kept the fireplace poker raised in one hand, his protective instincts divided between the brother who had risen from the dead and the fiancée who was unraveling before his eyes. With his left hand, Arthur retrieved the water-damaged envelope. His fingers tore through the seal.

Inside was a single sheet of heavy parchment, dated six years earlier, written in the steady, familiar hand of their late father, Marcus Sterling.

To my sons, the letter began. If you are reading this, I am already gone, and the poison that mimics my failing heart has done its work. Do not trust the archivist. Claire Vance is not the daughter of Jonathan Vance; she is the heir to the family that lost Blackwood Manor to us a century ago. She is systematically acquiring our deeds, our trusts, and our names. Julian has found the duplicate wills. Protect Eleanor. Protect the vault.

Arthur’s vision blurred with red rage. He lowered the poker slowly, turning his head toward Claire. "You killed my father?"

Claire let out a sharp, hysterical laugh that sounded entirely detached from sanity. "Your father was a tyrant who stole my family's legacy through corrupt court rulings! He deserved far worse than a painless digitalis overdose in his tea!" Her voice lost all its delicate warmth, turning harsh and venomous. "And you, Arthur... you were so blinded by your grief for your dead wife, so desperate for a mother for that worthless little girl, that you walked right into my arms."

Lily whimpered, clutching Arthur's leg.

Before Arthur could cross the room to seize her, Claire’s hand darted into the pocket of her billowing silk gown. When it reemerged, it was not empty. She held a small, nickel-plated snub-nosed revolver, its muzzle aimed directly at Lily’s forehead.

"Give me the brass key, Arthur," Claire whispered, her hand dead steady. "Or your daughter pays the debt your father owed."
