Chapter 12 - A Confrontation of Shadows

Richard stood in the doorway, his coat wet with evening mist. He looked at Thomas, then at Eleanor, his face a complex mixture of guilt, anger, and deep shame.
“Eleanor,” Richard said quietly. “Please... come home.”
Thomas slowly stood up from his chair, standing tall despite his frail condition. The two men, who had loved the same woman under entirely different circumstances, looked at each other in silence.
“You knew,” Thomas said, his voice steady and free of hatred. “You knew Arthur forced me out.”
Richard closed his eyes for a brief moment, swallowing hard. “Yes. I found out two years after you disappeared. Arthur showed me the legal papers. He told me it was done for the good of the family.”
“And you kept silent,” Eleanor said, stepping between the two men. “You let me grieve a man who was alive. You built our marriage on a foundation of betrayal.”
“I loved you, Eleanor!” Richard pleaded, his voice breaking with emotion. “From the moment I met you! I knew I couldn't replace Thomas in your heart, but I swore I would take care of you, protect you, and give you a good life! Was thirty-five years of devotion worth nothing because of a secret I didn't start?”
“You didn't start it, Richard,” Eleanor said coldly, “but you sustained it every single day you chose not to tell me the truth.”
Thomas raised a hand gently, motioning for calm. “Richard... I did not come back to tear your family apart. I am an old man at the end of my journey. You gave Eleanor the safety and family I was forbidden to give her. For that, I cannot hate you.”

Richard looked at Thomas, stunned by the dignity and grace of the man he had helped erase from history.
“I am leaving with Thomas tonight,” Eleanor announced firmly, looking at Richard with complete resolve. “I need time, Richard. I need to be where I belong for whatever time we have left.”
