Chapter 9 - The Cottage by the Shore

Guided by a small address listed at the back of Thomas’s journal, Eleanor drove alone down the coastal road late that afternoon. The road wound through dense pine forests before opening up into a small, secluded bay miles away from the main town.

At the end of a dirt lane stood a modest wooden cottage overlooking the sea. Smoke curled slowly from its stone chimney into the gray sky.

Eleanor parked the car and stepped out onto the damp earth. Her heart was beating fast, a mixture of profound fear and overwhelming love pushing her forward.

She walked up the wooden steps of the porch and knocked gently on the door.

For a long moment, there was only the sound of the ocean waves crashing against the shore below. Then, the heavy latch clicked, and the door creaked open.

Standing before her was the man from the ballroom window.

He was old, his face marked by deep lines of hardship and time. His hair was completely silver, and his body was lean and fragile. He wore a simple woolen sweater and trousers. But when he lifted his eyes to meet hers, Eleanor saw the exact same pale blue eyes that had looked at her with pure devotion when she was twenty-two years old.

Thomas stood in the doorway, his lips parted in disbelief.

“Eleanor,” he whispered. His voice was raspy, worn down by age, yet filled with an undeniable tenderness.

“Thomas,” Eleanor breathed, her voice trembling.

They stood there for a long time, separated by forty-three years of pain, deceit, and lost time. Thomas slowly reached out a weathered, trembling hand. Eleanor didn't hesitate. She stepped forward and took his hand, feeling the warm, living pulse beneath his skin.

He was not a ghost. He was real.
