Chapter 7 - The Shadow Behind the Family

Eleanor carried the iron box down the winding stairs of the lighthouse, her hands shaking under the weight of the truth. When she stepped out into the crisp morning air, she found her husband, Richard Vance, standing near her car, talking in low tones to the driver. Lily sat quietly in the back seat, looking out the window.
Richard turned as he heard Eleanor’s footsteps on the gravel path. His face, usually calm and composed, was pale and drawn with anxiety.
“Eleanor,” Richard said, walking quickly toward her. “Clara called me. She said you ran off to the cove at dawn. What is going on? What is that box?”
Eleanor stopped a few feet away from him, her gaze cold and penetrating. She looked at the man she had been married to for over thirty-five years. Richard had been her father’s younger business associate back in the 1980s. He had been the one to comfort her after Thomas disappeared.
“Did you know?” Eleanor asked, her voice deadly quiet.
Richard frowned, stepping closer. “Know what, Eleanor? You’re trembling. Let’s get you into the car.”
“Did you know what my father did to Thomas?” Eleanor screamed, the grief and rage of forty-three years exploding out of her.
Richard froze. The color drained completely from his face, and for a brief second, his eyes shifted away from hers—a subtle confession that shattered whatever was left of Eleanor’s world.
“Eleanor...” Richard started, his voice dropping to a strained whisper. “It was a different time. Your father was trying to protect you. Thomas’s family was ruined. He couldn't offer you a life—”
“You knew,” Eleanor interrupted, her voice breaking. “All these years... you sat across the dinner table from me. You held my hand when I cried on the anniversary of his passing. And you knew he was alive. You knew my father banished him!”
“I didn't plan it!” Richard insisted, stepping forward with his hands raised in defense. “Arthur handled everything before I even knew the full picture! By the time I found out, Thomas was gone, and you were heartbroken. What good would it have done to tell you back then? It would have destroyed your relationship with your father and brought shame to everyone!”

“It was my life!” Eleanor shouted, her tears falling freely now. “It was my choice! You built our marriage on a lie!”
From inside the car, Lily watched quietly, her small hand pressed against the glass. Behind her, standing in the gray fog at the edge of the woods, stood the tall, silent figure of the elderly Thomas, watching the scene unfold with quiet, tragic eyes.
