Chapter 14 - The Final Gift

Three days later, as the morning sun rose over Blackwood Cove, Thomas Read passed away peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by the sound of the ocean and the woman he had loved his entire life.
There was no grand, tragic spectacle—only a profound, quiet rest.
The funeral was held on the grassy cliffs overlooking the sea, near the old lighthouse. It was a small gathering: Eleanor, Clara, Lily, and a few old fishermen from the town who remembered Thomas as a boy.
Richard attended as well, standing at the back of the crowd in solemn respect, paying silent homage to the man whose shadow had shaped his entire life.
After the service, as the guests slowly filtered away, Eleanor stood alone at the cliff’s edge. She held a small wooden box containing Thomas’s journal and his father's old pocket watch. Around her neck, resting beneath her coat, she wore the silver ring on its leather chain.
Lily walked up beside her grandmother, reaching up to hold Eleanor’s hand.
“Is Grandpa Thomas happy now?” Lily asked gently.

Eleanor looked out at the vast blue ocean, where the morning sun cut a path of gold across the water.
“Yes, sweetie,” Eleanor said, her voice clear and filled with a peace she had never known before. “He is finally free.”
