Chapter 13 - The Last Summer Days

For the next three weeks, Eleanor stayed at the small coastal cottage with Thomas. She stepped away from the grand social events, the high-society expectations, and the lingering tension of the Vance estate.

Clara and Lily visited often. Lily loved listening to Thomas tell stories about his years at sea, while Clara gradually came to respect the gentle, selfless man her grandfather had tried to destroy. Richard stayed away, sending only quiet messages through Clara, respecting Eleanor’s need for distance as he confronted his own conscience.

During those weeks, Eleanor and Thomas walked along the rocky shoreline of Blackwood Cove. They sat on the wooden porch watching the sunset over the Atlantic, talking not of what was lost, but of the peace they had finally found.

Thomas’s health declined slowly, but his spirit remained light. For the first time in forty-three years, he was surrounded by love, his name restored, and his honor cleared.

One evening, as they sat on the porch wrapped in heavy blankets, watching the stars emerge over the dark ocean, Thomas reached out and took Eleanor’s hand.

“Do you remember the song you used to sing by the lighthouse?” Thomas asked softly, his voice faint.

May you like

Eleanor smiled softly, tears glistening in her eyes. She began to sing softly—an old coastal lullaby about the tide coming home to the shore.

Thomas closed his eyes, a serene, contented smile resting on his face as he listened to her voice, his hand warm inside hers.
