Chapter 1 - The Echo in the Grand Ballroom

The grand ballroom of the Ashford Estate hummed with the delicate clinking of crystal champagne flutes and muted classical strings. Elena pulled the silver tray closer to her chest, her fingers trembling against the polished metal. She had spent the last three years keeping her gaze lowered, existing only as a shadow in high-society houses. But tonight, the atmosphere felt suffocating.

Across the marble floor stood Julian Sterling—the reclusive tech titan whose name alone swayed stock markets. Tall, impeccably tailored in navy wool, he radiated an untouchable authority. Next to him, however, was chaos in miniature: a three-year-old girl named Lily, clutching a worn plush rabbit, crying softly amid the indifferent aristocrats.

Without warning, the little girl broke free from the nanny’s light grip. Her small patent leather shoes pattered across the floor, straight toward Elena. Elena froze, instincts warring with protocol.

The child threw her arms around Elena’s starched white apron, burying her face into the fabric. Elena’s heart seized in her chest. A peculiar, burning sensation flared behind her ribs—an irrational warmth she had forbidden herself from feeling ever since the sterile hospital room four years ago where they told her her newborn had died.

""Mommy..."" Lily whimpered, small hands clinging tightly.

A collective hush rippled through the nearest cluster of guests. Elena sank to her knees on instinct, steadying the child by her tiny shoulders. She wanted to pull away, to preserve her job, but her hands moved on their own, gentle and protective.

""No, sweetheart... I’m not..."" Elena whispered, her voice cracking under the weight of an agonizing ache.

Heavy, measured footsteps broke the silence. Elena looked up. Julian Sterling towered over them, his gaze piercing, dark, and utterly stripped of polite facade. His eyes locked onto hers, dissecting every micro-expression on her face with terrifying intensity.

""Did you ever have a child?"" Julian asked, his voice low, stern, and vibrating with suppressed turmoil.

Elena felt the room spin. The secret she had buried beneath years of silence rose to choke her throat. A tear spilled over her lashes.

May you like

""Yes..."" Elena whispered.

Julian’s breath hitched, his hardened features fracturing in profound shock. His jaw clenched as his gaze flicked violently down to the child clutching Elena's apron, and then back to the silver locket resting against Elena’s collarbone.
