Chapter 4 - Shadows on the Terrace
Julian reacted before his mind could fully process the sight. He sprinted across the bedroom, ripping open the French doors and bursting into the brisk autumn air. The terrace was empty, but the heavy wrought-iron railing bore fresh scrape marks. Below, among the manicured hedges, a figure dressed in black slipped past the security perimeter and disappeared into the treeline.
Julian cursed under his breath, reaching for his encrypted phone to alert the estate’s security detail. ""Lock down the perimeter. We have an intruder on the south lawn. Full sweep, now.""
He stepped back inside, bolting the glass doors behind him. Elena was holding Lily protectively, watching him with wide, frightened eyes. The child had already fallen into an exhausted slumber, her face pressed against Elena’s collarbone.
""Who was that?"" Elena asked, her voice shaking.
""Someone who just realized you're in this house,"" Julian said quietly, his jaw locked tight. ""Whoever arranged your fake death and sold me Lily didn't do it for charity. They wanted collateral.""
""Collateral against what?""
""Against my empire,"" Julian said, his eyes darkening with ruthless clarity. ""Sterling Technologies holds the primary defense and intelligence infrastructure contracts for the government. Lily’s custody is legally vulnerable if the biological arrangement was fraudulent. If you are alive, my legal claim to my daughter is compromised.""
Elena tightened her arms around the sleeping girl. ""I didn't know anything about you. I didn't even know her name was Lily. I just wanted my baby.""

Julian walked toward her, kneeling so he was eye-level with the woman who held his world in her arms. ""I will protect both of you. But you cannot leave this estate, Elena. Not tonight, and not until I find out who manufactured this tragedy.""
Before Elena could answer, the room plunged into sudden, pitch-black darkness. Downstairs, the piercing wail of the estate’s auxiliary alarm shattered the silence.
