Chapter 2 - The Secret Beneath the Silver Locket

Julian stood motionless, the glittering lights of the ballroom blurring into a haze. He knew that silver pendant. He had designed its unique filigree pattern himself, four years ago, before the private investigator reported that the woman carrying his surrogate child had perished in an untraceable clinic fire abroad.
""Take Miss Lily to the library,"" Julian commanded the approaching nanny, his voice barely above a rasp.
Lily wailed as she was pulled away, her tiny fingers slipping from Elena’s apron. ""Mommy! Don't leave!"" Every syllable felt like glass scraping against Elena's soul. She remained on her knees, head bowed, her breathing shallow and ragged.
""You,"" Julian said, looking down at Elena. ""Rise. Follow me.""
Elena swallowed hard, rising on shaky legs. Guests parted like the Red Sea as she followed the billionaire down the long, carpeted corridor leading away from the ballroom. Neither spoke until the heavy mahogany door of Julian’s private study clicked shut behind them, sealing out the noise of the gala.
Julian turned around, shedding his composure like a discarded coat. He closed the distance between them until Elena had to tilt her head back to meet his fierce, searching eyes.
""Where did you get that locket?"" he demanded, pointing a finger at her chest.
Elena reflexively touched the cold silver oval resting over her heartbeat. ""It belonged to my daughter. It’s all I have left of her.""
""Your daughter is dead according to medical records from St. Jude’s Memorial,"" Julian said, his voice dropping into a dangerous whisper. ""I signed the death certificate myself. I paid for the plot in the cemetery.""
Elena went rigid, blood draining entirely from her face. Her voice barely carried across the quiet room. ""What did you say? St. Jude’s? Who... who are you?""

Julian pulled out a leather wallet from his inner suit pocket and withdrew a folded, worn piece of paper. He unfolded it slowly and slapped it onto the mahogany desk. It was an intake contract for anonymous surrogacy, dated four years ago, stamped with her own maiden signature.
""You weren't supposed to survive,"" Julian breathed, his eyes wild with a mixture of betrayal and desperate hope. ""And someone took my daughter from the nursery before I could hold her.""
