Chapter 6 - A Voice from the Past

Elena froze, clutching Lily so hard she feared she might hurt the child. She knew that voice. It was the calm, cultured voice of Dr. Victor Vance—the lead obstetrician who had held her hand in the delivery room four years ago and gently delivered the news that her baby had died.

From the alcove emerged a man in a sharply tailored coat, his silver-rimmed glasses catching the moonlight. Beside him stood an armed guard, holding an assault rifle at the low ready.

""Dr. Vance..."" Elena gasped, her voice choked with pure disbelief. ""You... you told me she didn't breathe.""

""A medical simplification, my dear,"" Vance said with a slick, patronizing smile. ""A live child was far too valuable to leave with an impoverished orphan. Especially when Mr. Sterling was willing to pay tens of millions through intermediaries for an heir.""

""You monster,"" Elena snarled, stepping backward against the safe room door.

""Business is business,"" Vance shrugged. ""Julian was supposed to raise the child until her eighteenth birthday, at which point certain hidden clauses in the trust would transfer executive control of Sterling Technologies to our syndicate. But you... showing up as a maid? It’s an intolerable statistical error.""

Behind them, down the long corridor, the sound of a brutal impact and a sickening crack signaled that Julian had overpowered his attacker. Vance’s eyes flickered with annoyance.

""Kill the woman and secure the girl,"" Vance commanded his guard coldly.

The guard raised the rifle, leveling the barrel directly at Elena’s forehead. Elena closed her eyes, turning her back to shield Lily with her entire body.

A gunshot cracked through the corridor. But the bullet didn't hit Elena.

She turned to see the guard collapse onto the floor with a groan. Julian stood twenty feet away, bruised, bleeding from a cut across his forehead, holding the second attacker's fallen weapon.

""Get away from my family,"" Julian growled, his eyes burning with lethal intent.

Vance pulled a small detonator from his pocket. ""Always so predictable, Julian.""
