Chapter 1 - The Broken Diner Counter

The hum of heavy engines vibrated through the floorboards of the rusty horseshoe diner, rattling the empty coffee mugs and filling the air with the thick, greasy scent of fried bacon and exhaust. Jax kept his gaze locked on his coffee cup, ignoring the way the old vinyl stool creaked beneath his weight. At forty-eight, his tattooed arms and thick leather vest were a wall he built around himself long ago, a barrier against the restless ghosts of his past. But the sharp, hesitant chime of the front door bell cut right through the noise of the biker rally outside. He didn't turn around, assuming it was just another patched-in rider looking for a refill or a fight.

Instead, a quiet, cautious step approached his spot at the end of the counter. Jax felt a shadow fall over him, small and fragile compared to the hulking frames of the men surrounding him. He glanced sideways out of the corner of his eye and saw an eight-year-old boy standing there. The kid looked like a walking ghost story—pale skin, messy light brown hair, wearing a jacket that was three sizes too big, and scuffed sneakers that had seen better miles. The boy’s big, hopeful hazel eyes locked directly onto Jax with an intensity that made the hardened biker's breath hitch in his throat.

With trembling fingers, the boy reached into his pocket and pulled out a worn, frayed piece of cardboard. He slid it slowly across the formica counter, right next to Jax’s steaming mug. The photograph was faded around the edges, showing a much younger biker with a wild mane of hair laughing as he cradled a newborn infant in his tattooed arms. Jax’s hand froze instantly, every muscle in his body locking up as the past he had tried to bury came crashing back into focus.

The diner seemed to fall completely silent around them, the roar of the engines fading into a dull hum. The boy swallowed hard, his voice barely a breath against the sudden tension in the room. ""My mom said this is you,"" the boy whispered, his eyes shining with unyielding faith. Jax stared at the image, a cold sweat breaking out across his forehead as he realized his entire carefully constructed life was about to unravel.
