Chapter 3 - Whispers in the Smoke

The small folded paper trembled slightly between the boy’s thumb and forefinger as he placed it right beside Jax’s trapped hand. It wasn't a formal letter; it looked like a page torn from a cheap spiral notebook, worn soft at the folds from being clutched too many times. Jax couldn't bring himself to look at it, keeping his palm pinned firmly over the old photograph as if physical force could keep his past from bleeding out onto the counter. The diner around them buzzed with the low chatter of other bikers, completely unaware that a quiet emotional storm was tearing the ground out from under their road captain.

Martha crossed her arms over her apron, her eyes darting between Jax’s rigid posture and the innocent face of the child. She had seen Jax face down rivals, police officers, and highway patrolmen without flinching, yet here he was, trapped by an eight-year-old kid. ""Kid,"" Martha started, her tone softening just a fraction despite her suspicion, ""you shouldn't be wandering around a place like this alone. Where is your mother?""

The boy didn't look at Martha. His gaze remained locked on Jax, unwavering and deep, carrying a maturity no child should ever have to wear. When he finally spoke, his voice was no longer just a soft greeting—it was a whisper that cut straight through the ambient noise of the diner, carrying a weight that forced every nearby biker to unconsciously lower their voices.

""Mom said you left before I was born,"" the boy whispered, the words hanging in the smoky air like a sentence. Jax closed his eyes, a sharp pain squeezing his chest. Those exact words were a recording from a lifetime ago, a promise he had broken, a goodbye he thought he had successfully outrun on thousands of miles of open highway. He slowly lifted his hand from the photograph, exposing the faded image to the harsh diner light once more.
