SHADOWS OF THE OPEN ROAD / Chapter 15 / 15

Chapter 15 - The End of the Highway

The morning sun broke over the mountain ridge, burning away the mist that clung to the pine trees and casting a golden warmth across the cabin porch. The unconscious men and their sedan were long gone, towed away and dealt with by Big Jim and the club members who had quietly arrived at dawn to watch Jax’s back. The highway out front was quiet now, stretching away into the distance like a ribbon of endless possibility, but for the first time in twenty years, Jax didn't feel the itch to ride away.

Inside the cabin, the smell of fresh coffee and frying eggs filled the cozy kitchen. Little Leo sat at the wooden dining table, carefully placing two items side by side—the old faded polaroid of a young biker holding a baby, and a brand new photograph taken just this morning, showing the boy sitting proudly on the saddle of Jax’s chopper with his arms wrapped around his father. Sarah stood by the stove, watching Jax wrap bandages around his bruised knuckles with a quiet, grounding peace she hadn't felt in a lifetime.

Jax walked over to the table, pulling out a wooden chair and sitting down across from his son. He picked up the old polaroid, tracing the yellowed edges with his thumb, then looked up into those big, hopeful hazel eyes that had changed his entire world. The open road would always be there, winding through the mountains and calling out to the restless soul inside him, but he finally understood where his journey was supposed to end.

""You ready to learn how to ride that bike properly, kid?"" Jax asked with a rare, genuine smile breaking across his bearded face. Leo grinned, nodding eagerly as he slid the small folded paper off the table and tucked it safely back into his jacket pocket, ready for whatever adventures lay ahead."
