Chapter 14 - Blood on the Asphalt

The fight was fast, brutal, and ruthless. Jax took a heavy blow to the jaw that tasted like copper and iron, but adrenaline kept him moving, fueled by the terrifying thought of what those men would do if they reached the cabin door. With a surge of raw strength, he grabbed his opponent by the tactical vest, slamming him headfirst into the side panel of the sedan with a deafening metallic crash that knocked the man out cold.
Panting heavily, blood dripping from a cut above his eye, Jax spun around to face the first attacker, who was staggering back to his feet, pulling a heavy hunting knife from his belt. ""You're dead, biker,"" the man hissed, lunging forward with a downward slash. Jax sidestepped at the last possible second, catching the man's wrist and twisting it upward with bone-crushing force until the knife clattered uselessly into the dirt. With one final, decisive strike, Jax landed a right hook that dropped the second attacker like a stone.
Silence flooded back over the clearing, broken only by the heavy wheezing of the defeated men and Jax's own ragged, exhausted breathing. He stood over them for a long moment, wiping blood from his forehead with the back of his tattooed hand, before turning his gaze toward the cabin. The front door cracked open an inch, and Sarah peeked out into the clearing, her eyes wide with shock as she took in the unconscious men sprawled across the gravel.

She flung the door wide open, and little Leo came running out across the porch, stopping short as he saw Jax standing battered and bruised in the moonlight. The boy didn't look scared; instead, his big hazel eyes shone with a mix of awe and fierce admiration. Sarah hurried down the steps, stopping right in front of Jax, her hands reaching out gently to touch the fresh bruise on his cheek.
""You're an idiot, Jax,"" she whispered, a watery smile breaking through her fear as tears welled in her eyes. ""Maybe so,"" Jax replied softly, looking down at Leo, who had walked up and grabbed the hem of his leather vest. ""But I'm not running anymore.""
