Chapter 11 - Light in the Clearing

The cabin looked untouched by time, its timber walls weathered gray by decades of mountain snow and summer rain. A thin trail of smoke curled lazily from the stone chimney, smelling faintly of burning cedar and pine. Jax pushed the motorcycle quietly alongside the dirt path, keeping the engine dead so as not to announce their arrival. He kept his hand resting protectively on the boy’s small shoulder as they stepped out of the dense forest shadows and into the moonlit clearing.

The boy didn't wait for Jax; his small legs carried him swiftly across the clearing toward the wooden porch steps, his scuffed sneakers crunching softly against the gravel. But before the boy could reach the front door, it swung open slowly. Standing in the threshold was a woman with sharp, familiar features, wearing a worn flannel shirt and holding a kerosene lantern that cast a warm golden glow across her tired face.

Sarah stopped dead in her tracks, the lantern trembling slightly in her hand as her eyes locked onto the small figure standing at the base of her porch. For a second, the universe seemed to hold its breath. Then, dropping the lantern safely onto the porch floor, Sarah rushed down the steps and dropped to her knees, pulling the boy fiercely into her arms, burying her face in his messy light brown hair as silent, overwhelming tears finally broke free.

""Leo... oh, thank God, Leo, you're safe,"" Sarah sobbed quietly, holding him as if she would never let go. Jax stood at the edge of the clearing, watching the reunion from the shadows of his motorcycle, a heavy mixture of relief and deep unworthiness twisting inside his chest. He turned around, quietly swinging his leg back over the bike and reaching for the ignition switch, figuring his penance was paid and his part in their lives was over.

""Jax, don't you dare,"" Sarah's voice cut sharply through the quiet night air, stopping him cold before his hand could even touch the key.
