Chapter 10 - Shadows of Distrust

Despite the quiet progress, small towns carry long memories. Some residents remained skeptical of Jax’s presence, unable to separate the man he was becoming from the troubled history associated with his name.

At the local market one afternoon, an old acquaintance approached Jax, attempting to drag him back into old rivalries and illegal trades. The encounter was tense, watched by several onlookers who expected Jax to react with his former violence.

Jax felt the heat of old anger rising in his chest. His fists clenched automatically at his sides. But then he looked down and saw Toby watching him from the storefront door, clutching a bag of groceries.

Taking a deep, controlled breath, Jax unclenched his hands. He looked his former associate in the eye with calm finality.

"That’s not my path anymore," Jax said quietly but firmly. "Find someone else."

He turned his back on the past and walked toward his son, leaving the lingering doubts of the town behind him.
