Chapter 9 - Rebuilding the Foundation
Reconstruction did not happen overnight. Forgiveness is a choice made daily, requiring patience and practical effort. Jax moved into a small cottage on the outskirts of the valley, taking a job at the local repair shop owned by a sympathetic veteran who believed in second chances.
Bennett stayed close, offering guidance without overstepping. He watched as Jax learned the small, everyday rhythms of parenthood—helping Toby with his schoolwork, preparing simple meals, and learning to listen without letting anger dictate his responses.
One evening, Lena visited the cottage, bringing a basket of fresh produce from her garden. She found Jax sitting on the porch, watching Toby build a wooden birdhouse with spare offcuts from the shop.

"You're doing well, Jax," Lena said softly, leaning against the porch railing.
"I have a lot of years to make up for," Jax replied, watching his son carefully measure a piece of pine. "I used to think strength was about pushing people away so they couldn't hurt you. Now I see it’s about standing still and letting them in."
