Days passed as legal proceedings clarified Jax’s limited role in the recent events. Because he had refused to participate in the violence and had ultimately helped authorities locate the real perpetrators, his sentence was suspended, placed instead on strict probation and community restitution.
On the morning of his release, Bennett brought Toby to the quiet wooden bridge near the edge of town—a place that separated the industrial highway from the residential valley.

Jax stepped off the transport bus, carrying a small canvas bag containing his few personal belongings. He stopped at the foot of the bridge, seeing the young boy standing beside Bennett. The air was clear and still, the morning sun casting long shadows across the timber planks.
For a long moment, neither moved. The years of guilt and distance seemed to stack like an immovable wall between them. Jax took a slow, heavy breath, taking one cautious step onto the bridge, lowering himself to one knee.
