Chapter 4 - Whispers in the Dark

The drawer slid open with a faint, oiled squeak that sounded like a gunshot in the midnight quiet of the study. Elena’s trembling fingers sifted through a stack of insurance papers, medical bills, and bank statements until her fingertips brushed against a crisp, unsealed manila envelope labeled Confidential - Incident Report #4489. Her heart hammered violently against her ribs as she pulled the document out, unfolding the pages under the dim glow of her smartphone screen.
There it was, written in sharp, objective police handwriting: Witness statement from delivery driver Marcus Vance (no relation). The statement explicitly contradicted Clara’s fabricated claim that Elena had fallen unassisted. Marcus had stated clearly: “I saw an older woman grab the pregnant girl by her hair and violently yank her down the stairs just as I opened the front door.”
Tears of vindication and fresh fury blurred Elena’s vision. She hadn't imagined it. She wasn't crazy. Clara was a murderer, and David had actively helped cover it up to protect his mother's pristine social standing and his inheritance. Before Elena could snap a photo of the document with her phone, a floorboard creaked loudly right outside the study door.
The light in the hallway flickered on, casting a long, distorted shadow across the Persian rug. The door handle turned slowly, with agonizing deliberation. Elena froze, clutching the report to her chest like a shield, her mind racing for an exit. The French doors leading to the back patio were locked from the outside, leaving only one way out—straight past whoever was standing in the doorway.
The door swung wide open, revealing not David, but Clara. The older woman wasn't wearing her usual immaculate daytime cardigan; instead, she wore a dark silk robe, her short hair slightly unkempt, holding a heavy porcelain mug of hot water. Her eyes didn't register surprise; instead, a cold, predatory smirk spread slowly across her weathered face.
""Looking for bedtime reading, Elena?"" Clara’s voice was low, smooth, and laced with absolute venom as she stepped inside, blocking the only exit from the room. ""I told you, curiosity is a fatal flaw in this family. Just ask your unfortunate little friend who used to live in this guest room before you arrived.""
Elena’s blood ran cold. She gripped the edge of the mahogany desk, her knuckles turning white. ""What are you talking about? What happened to the person who lived here before me?""
Clara took a step closer, setting her mug down on a side table with a deliberate thud. ""Oh, she was just like you—full of spirit, asking too many questions, refusing to bow down to proper authority. She had an unfortunate accident in the master bathroom. Slippery tiles, you know how dangerous modern architecture can be.""
May you like
""You monster,"" Elena breathed out, the word tasting like ash in her mouth. She backed away slowly until her lower back pressed hard against the locked French doors. ""You didn't just push me down those stairs... you've done this before. You're a serial killer hiding behind a suburban housewife's apron.""
Clara laughed softly, a chilling sound devoid of any human warmth. She reached into the deep pocket of her silk robe and pulled out a small, amber medicine bottle, shaking it gently so the pills rattled like a rattlesnake's tail. ""Nobody will ever believe a grieving, mentally unstable woman who tried to drown her sorrows in prescription sedatives. David is already prepared to sign the commitment papers for the private sanitarium upstate. All I need to do right now is help you swallow your medicine.""
