Chapter 6 - Echoes in the Dust

The heavy brass candlestick grazed Elena’s shoulder with a sickening thud, throwing her off balance against the wall, but adrenaline kept her from going down. She spun around, ducking under Clara’s second wild swing, and bolted down the stairs toward the front foyer. Behind her, Clara’s furious shrieks echoed off the high vaulted ceilings, joined by David’s panicked shouts trying to separate them.
""Stop! Both of you, stop this madness!"" David roared, stumbling down the stairs behind his mother, his hands finally empty of the police report that had fallen to the hallway floor above.
Elena reached the front door in a blur of motion, her fingers frantically fumbling with the heavy deadbolt lock. The brass mechanism was stiff, rusted slightly from the humidity, refusing to turn on the first try. Panic clawed at her throat as she heard Clara’s heavy footsteps descending the stairs with terrifying speed, closing the distance between them.
""You're not leaving this house, you ungrateful little bitch!"" Clara snarled, her mask of civility completely shattered, revealing the raving tyrant underneath.
With one final, desperate heave of her entire body weight, Elena threw her shoulder against the deadbolt. The metal mechanism clicked open with a loud, echoing snap. She jerked the front door wide open, tumbling outward onto the covered front porch just as Clara lunged forward to grab the back of her shirt. Fabric ripped loudly, but Elena broke free, tumbling down the concrete porch steps onto the damp lawn.
The morning air hit her face like ice water, sharp and exhilarating. She scrambled to her feet, ignoring the searing pain in her ribs, and ran toward the edge of the long driveway where the suburban streetlights were just beginning to flicker off against the breaking dawn. Behind her, David appeared in the doorway, shouting her name in horror as he watched his wife flee into the misty morning.
""Elena, wait! Let's talk about this inside!"" David cried out, taking a step off the porch, but Clara grabbed his arm with a vice-like grip, whispering venomous warnings into his ear that stopped him dead in his tracks.

Elena didn't look back. She ran down the asphalt road until her lungs burned and her legs felt like lead, clutching the torn fabric of her shirt where Clara's claws had ripped it. She knew she couldn't go to the local police department blindly—not when Clara’s influence and wealth reached deep into the town's municipal roots. She needed outside help, federal help, and she needed it before David and his mother cleaned up the remaining evidence inside the house.
She ducked behind a row of thick evergreen hedges bordering a neighbor's property, catching her breath in ragged, painful gasps. As she pulled out her phone to dial an emergency tip line, a sleek black sedan pulled out of a driveway down the street, its headlights sweeping across the pavement. The driver’s window rolled down slowly, revealing a local police detective whom Elena recognized from the initial accident report—Detective Vance, a man whose last name wasn't the only coincidence linking him directly to Clara’s payroll.
