Chapter 5 - The Breaking Point

The amber bottle caught the moonlight as Clara stepped closer, her eyes locked onto Elena with terrifying determination. Elena’s mind raced through her options: fight back and risk further injury to her healing ribs, or look for a distraction that could buy her precious seconds to reach the hallway. She chose the latter, kicking a heavy leather armchair directly into Clara’s path.
The chair slammed into Clara’s shins, catching the older woman off guard and sending her stumbling backward with a sharp cry of shock. Elena didn't hesitate; she sprinted past her mother-in-law, clutching the police report tightly to her chest, bursting out into the hallway just as David’s bedroom door swung open.
David stood there rubbing his eyes, wearing pajama pants, looking bewildered and disoriented by the commotion. ""Elena? Mom? What in the world is going on at two in the morning?""
""Your mother is a murderer, David!"" Elena screamed, shoving the police report directly into his chest. ""Read it! Read what the delivery driver actually saw! She killed our baby, and now she was trying to poison me just like she did to the woman who lived here before!""
David stared down at the document, his hands trembling as his eyes scanned the official police letterhead and Marcus’s handwritten statement. The color drained completely from his face, leaving him looking like a ghost in the dim hallway lighting. He looked up slowly from the paper to Elena, and then past her toward the study door where Clara was now standing, her expression shifting instantly from predatory rage to vulnerable, weeping innocence.
""David, my sweet boy,"" Clara sobbed, her voice breaking with masterclass manipulation as she clutched her bruised shin. ""She's losing her mind from the grief. She attacked me in the study with a chair! Look at my leg—she's completely delusional, David. You have to protect us from her before she hurts someone else.""
David stood frozen in the center of the hallway, caught between the damning physical evidence in his hands and a lifetime of psychological conditioning by the mother who controlled his entire existence. He looked at Elena’s fierce, desperate eyes, then at Clara’s manufactured tears. For a agonizing minute, absolute silence reigned over the household—a silence that would determine whether truth or darkness would prevail.

""David, make your choice,"" Elena whispered, her voice dropping to a dangerous, resolute calm as she stepped toward the front stairs, holding the report like a weapon. ""Choose the truth, or lose me forever.""
David opened his mouth to speak, but before a single word could escape his lips, Clara lunged forward from the shadows with a heavy brass candlestick snatched from the console table, aiming a devastating blow directly at the back of Elena's head.
