Chapter 9 - Roaring Back

The heavy matte-black motorcycle accelerated down the winding suburban road, leaving Detective Vance standing alone beside his sedan in a cloud of exhaust fumes and impotent rage. Elena clung tightly to Jax’s leather vest, the wind whipping past her face and clearing the fog of fear that had paralyzed her for weeks. The pain in her ribs flared with every bump in the road, but for the first time since the fall, she felt a burning spark of absolute power rather than helplessness.

They didn't head toward the highway out of town; instead, Jax looped back around through the dense wooded perimeter behind the Vance estate, parking the heavy bike deep among the towering pine trees where the dense foliage completely concealed it from the main house's security cameras.

""She thinks she's untouchable because she owns the local cops and half the county judges,"" Jax said, killing the engine and stepping off the bike. He reached into a saddlebag and pulled out a heavy steel crowbar and a small digital scanner. ""Clara built her entire life on secrets, buried money, and intimidation. But a fortress built on lies always has a rotten foundation.""

Elena dismounted stiffly, her legs shaking slightly as her boots hit the damp forest floor. She pulled the encrypted flash drive Detective Vance had dropped from her pocket, holding it up triumphantly. ""I have more than secrets, Jax. I have the financial wire transfers connecting Clara to the county coroner who covered up the previous tenant's murder.""

Jax stopped, turning his head slowly to look at the flash drive in her hand. A grim, satisfied smile touched the corners of his scarred lips. ""Well, look at you. You really are my sister's daughter. Let's go finish what your grandmother started twenty years ago.""

They crept through the overgrown backyard garden toward the rear French doors of the study where Elena had been cornered hours earlier. To their surprise, the glass door was unlocked—a sign of the chaotic panic currently gripping the household inside. As they slipped silently into the dimly lit study, the muffled sound of shouting echoed down the hallway from the master living room.

""What do you mean she's gone, David?!"" Clara’s shrill voice pierced the quiet house like a siren. ""If she goes to the state police with that delivery driver's statement, we are both going to federal prison for conspiracy and manslaughter!""

""I tried to stop her, Mom!"" David’s voice sounded frantic, broken, and utterly pathetic. ""You're the one who swung the candlestick! You're the one who pushed her in the first place! I covered for you, I lied to the cops, but I'm not taking the fall for murder alone!""

Jax raised a hand, signaling Elena to stay put near the doorway, while he walked silently down the hallway toward the archway of the living room, the heavy crowbar resting casually over his shoulder like an executioner's axe.
