Chapter 10 - The NICU Ward

""Drive!"" Ethan screamed, slamming his fist against the dashboard. ""She's at the hospital! She's near my son!""

Marcus slammed his foot on the accelerator, the sedan roaring into life and screeching into the city traffic, running two red lights in rapid succession. Ethan dialed Lily’s number frantically, but the phone rang out until it hit voicemail. He dialed Dr. Harrison; the line went straight to a busy signal.

""She's isolating them,"" Marcus said grimly, his knuckles turning white on the steering wheel. ""She owns the hospital board, Ethan. She probably had Harrison pulled into an emergency board meeting to strip his credentials, and your sister has likely been escorted off the premises by private security.""

""If she lays a hand on him—""

""She won't get her hands dirty directly,"" Marcus cut him off coldly. ""She uses others to do the butchering. She'll alter a dose in the IV drip or simulate an equipment failure. She's a phantom, Ethan. To stop her, you have to hit her where she can't buy her way out.""

Fifteen agonizing minutes later, the sedan slid to a halt in front of the emergency wing. Ethan didn't wait for Marcus. He leaped out of the moving vehicle, sprinted through the automatic sliding doors, and pushed past orderlies and startled nurses toward the fourth-floor neonatal unit.

When he reached the corridor, he saw two private security guards in sharp black suits standing outside the NICU doors.

""Step aside,"" Ethan snarled, lunging forward.

The larger guard stepped into his path, his hand resting on his taser holster. ""Mr. Vance, your mother has requested private visitation. Family members are asked to wait—""

Ethan didn't let him finish. He threw a devastating left hook that caught the guard square on the jaw, sending him crashing into the wall.
