Chapter 14 - Confessions in Iron

The click of the handcuffs around Eleanor Vance’s wrists sounded like thunder in the sterile ICU.
""You can't do this to me!"" Eleanor screamed, the veneer of aristocratic dignity peeling away entirely. ""Do you know who I am? I run this city! I built this hospital! You will all be fired by morning!""
""Save it for your arraignment, Mrs. Vance,"" Miller said coldly, signaling his officers to haul her out. ""You are under arrest for attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and manufacturing a controlled substance.""
As Eleanor was dragged toward the door, she locked eyes with Ethan. There was no motherly warmth left, only pure, undiluted malice. ""You will destroy this empire, Ethan! You and that pathetic waitress! You will burn everything I built!""
""Good,"" Ethan said softly. ""It was built on blood anyway.""
Once the chaotic procession cleared out of the neonatal unit, silence returned to the room. Dr. Harrison immediately walked to the incubator, carefully examining the baby boy. Ethan stepped beside him, his heart pounding in his chest.
""How is he, Harrison?"" Ethan whispered, barely daring to breathe.
Harrison checked the vital monitors and leaned over the glass, a genuine smile breaking through his tired face. ""He's a fighter, Ethan. His oxygen levels are stabilizing. The poison never touched him. He's going to make it.""

Tears, long held back by pure adrenaline, finally blurred Ethan’s vision. He reached through the circular portal of the incubator, gently letting his infant son's tiny fingers wrap around his index finger.
At that moment, Lily burst into the room, her eyes wide with frantic relief. ""Ethan! It's Clara! She’s waking up!""
