Chapter 5 - Hidden Prescriptions

The word poison echoed in Ethan’s ears like a detonating bomb. The pieces of the past month slammed together with terrifying clarity: the sudden bouts of nausea Clara experienced after dinner, the unlabelled organic supplements Eleanor had insisted Clara take for ""fetal health,"" and the sudden firing of their private chef two weeks prior.

""Who else knows about this report?"" Ethan demanded, his voice low and vibrating with dangerous intent.

""Just the lab technician and me,"" Dr. Harrison said quietly. ""By law, I am required to flag this as an attempted homicide to the police within the hour.""

""Flag it,"" Ethan replied instantly. ""I want the police involved immediately. I will personally file the statement.""

""Ethan, wait,"" Lily suddenly stood up from the corner, her face pale as a ghost. She clutched her smartphone in her hand, the screen glowing brightly. ""You can't do that yet. Look at this.""

Ethan grabbed her phone. The screen displayed a secure family security app connected to the cameras in the family estate. The cameras in the dining room and kitchen had just gone completely black. A notification read: System override by Admin: Eleanor Vance. Data wiped.

""She's destroying everything,"" Lily whispered, tears spilling over her eyelashes. ""The tea, the cups, the broken glass. She's cleaning the entire crime scene right now. If the police go there with just our word, her attorneys will tear us apart before the sun rises.""

Ethan handed the phone back, his jaw clenching so hard a tooth nearly cracked. ""She might erase the physical evidence in the house,"" he said, turning back toward the doors of the intensive care unit. ""But she made one fatal mistake. She forgot that Clara kept a diary.""
