Chapter 4 - The Sterile Waiting Room

The smell of antiseptic and industrial floor wax hit Ethan like a slap to the face. The harsh fluorescent lights of St. Jude's Memorial Hospital hummed incessantly, vibrating against his skull. He paced the narrow corridor outside Operating Room 3, his hands still encrusted with Clara’s dried blood.

Hours felt like centuries. Lily sat in the plastic corner chair, her knees drawn up to her chest, trembling as she stared at the floor. Every time the heavy double doors swung open, Ethan flinched, expecting a grim-faced doctor delivering a death sentence.

Finally, the doors parted, and Dr. Harrison walked out. He pulled his surgical mask down, revealing deep exhaustion and grim concern etched into his forehead.

""Ethan,"" Harrison began, wiping sweat from his brow.

""Are they alive?"" Ethan interrupted, his breath hitching in his chest. ""Harrison, please. Are they alive?""

The doctor hesitated for a fraction of a second, an eternity that made Ethan's stomach plummet into a bottomless pit. ""Clara survived the surgery. She is in an induced coma in the intensive care unit. We managed to stop the uterine rupture, but she has lost a catastrophic amount of blood.""

Ethan took a ragged breath, leaning against the wall for support. ""And the baby?""

Harrison’s expression hardened, his voice dropping to a somber whisper. ""A boy. He’s in the neonatal ICU. He's fighting, Ethan, but his vitals are erratic. But there's something else... something that doesn't make medical sense.""

Ethan gripped the doctor's scrub top. ""What do you mean?""

""The baby's blood panels came back,"" Harrison whispered, glancing around the empty hallway cautiously. ""We found trace amounts of concentrated mifepristone and an unlisted synthetic alkaloid in his cord blood. Ethan... someone didn't just cause a fall. Someone has been systematically poisoning her for weeks.""
