Chapter 10 - The Reckoning of Solitude

Judge Althaus looked down at the paperwork before her, her expression solemn. She cleared her throat, her gavel resting lightly under her hand.

""Victoria Vance, the violence you exhibited on the afternoon of October twelfth was not an accident of passion. It was the culmination of unchecked entitlement and venomous obsession. You entered a private sanctuary with malice, and your actions nearly extinguished two lives.""

The judge leaned forward, her voice echoing with judicial finality.

""The victim in this case has shown an extraordinary, rare measure of humanity—a humanity that stands in stark contrast to the brutality you displayed. However, mercy in the human heart cannot supplant justice in the civic realm. The law exists precisely to protect the innocent from the violent.""

The gavel rose.

""I sentence you to seven years at the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility, with eligibility for parole only after serving eighty-five percent of that term. You will submit to mandatory psychiatric treatment during your incarceration, and upon release, an indefinite order of protection will remain in effect. You will never contact Elena Sterling, Marcus Sterling, or their child again.""

Crack.

The sound of the gavel fell like a guillotine.

Two bailiffs stepped forward, their handcuffs clicking around Victoria’s wrists. Arthur Vance stood, his face unreadable as he buttoned his coat, turned his back on his daughter, and walked out the side exit surrounded by his lawyers. He did not look back. He did not offer a hand. The illusion of family loyalty had ended where corporate liability began.

Victoria was led away toward the holding cells. As she reached the heavy metal door, she turned back one final time.

Marcus and Elena were not watching her. Marcus had his arm wrapped securely around Elena’s waist, his head bowed close to hers, his thumb gently wiping away a stray tear from her cheek. They were already turned toward the exit, stepping out into the daylight together.

To Victoria, the realization hit with the cold finality of iron: she was truly alone. Her wealth, her beauty, her family status—all of it had been an ornate cage of her own making. In trying to destroy Elena, she had merely demolished herself.
