Chapter 3 - Fragile Whispers

Room 412 was shaded by drawn blinds that softened the afternoon sun into a muted amber glow. The steady, hypnotic thump-thump-thump of the fetal monitor echoed in the space, a rhythm so fragile yet persistent it brought tears to Marcus’s eyes as he slipped through the door.
Elena was propped slightly against a sea of white pillows. Her pale face was washed out, purple shadows pooling beneath her almond-shaped hazel eyes. Her left arm was bandaged from wrist to elbow; an IV cannula dripped saline and tocolytics into the back of her right hand. But her face turned toward him the moment the hinges creaked, and she offered a faint, tremulous smile.
""Hey,"" she whispered.
Marcus approached the bed as if walking on water. He pulled a chair close, sinking onto the edge, and carefully touched the tips of her uninjured fingers. ""Hey, my brave girl.""
""Did you hear that sound?"" she asked softly, nodding toward the Doppler machine. ""That’s her. She’s fighting.""
""She has your heart,"" Marcus said, his throat constricting. He brought her hand to his lips, kissing the cold skin. ""Elena... I am so sorry. I brought that madness into your life. If I had secured the building, if I had taken out a restraining order months ago—""
""Stop,"" Elena said gently, pressing her fingers against his lips. Her voice, though weakened, carried a resolve that silenced him. ""You didn't push me, Marcus. Victoria made her choice. Do not give her the power to poison what we are doing here. Blaming yourself is just another way of letting her steal our peace.""
Marcus looked at his wife, humbled as he always was by her capacity for clarity amidst trauma. Where others sought vengeance or collapsed into hysteria, Elena sought balance. She spent her days restoring century-old canvasses, patiently peeling back layers of grime and neglect to uncover original colors without tearing the fabric. She was applying the same profound, gentle grace to their shattered evening.
""Detective Lawson from precinct five is waiting outside,"" Marcus said quietly. ""He took my statement in the lobby. He needs your formal complaint to issue the felony arrest warrant for aggravated assault and reckless endangerment.""
Elena turned her gaze toward the ceiling, watching the shadow of a tree branch sway against the wall outside. ""Aggravated assault.""
""She tried to kill our child, Elena. There is no middle ground.""
""I know,"" she murmured softly. ""I will talk to him. Justice must have its course, not out of revenge, but so she cannot do this to someone else. But Marcus... promise me something.""
""Anything.""

""Do not let anger become your home,"" she whispered, her eyes meeting his with fierce intensity. ""I saw your face before she ran. You had murder in your eyes. If you let that darkness take root, Victoria wins anyway. She will have shattered you from the inside.""
Before Marcus could answer, the door opened softly. Detective Lawson stepped inside, holding a leather notepad, his eyes respectful of the sanctity of the room.
