Chapter 4 - Paper Tigers

Across town, in the gated enclave of Highland Ridge, Victoria Vance paced the length of her father’s mahogany-paneled library. The green dress was crumpled, its hem stained with gray dust from the penthouse floor. Her hands were shaking so violently that the ice cubes clinked like wind chimes against the tumbler of gin she held.

Arthur Vance sat behind his massive oak desk, a man carved out of old money, ruthless litigation, and cold discipline. He had built an empire by calculating risks and exploiting weakness. Now, his eyes were cold as slate as he watched his only daughter disintegrate.

""You pushed her,"" Arthur stated, his voice flat, stripped of paternal warmth.

""She provoked me, Daddy!"" Victoria cried out, her voice shrill, bouncing off the leather-bound volumes of law and corporate history. ""She stood there looking at me with that patronizing pity! She thinks she’s better than me just because she’s carrying his heir! She took my place! That penthouse, that life, Marcus—it was supposed to be mine!""

""Shut up,"" Arthur said. The words were delivered at barely a whisper, yet Victoria stopped dead, her chest heaving.

Arthur stood up, buttoning his suit jacket. ""You broke into a private residence. You assaulted a woman in her third trimester. Marcus has already surrendered the building's digital surveillance logs to the precinct. The footage leaves no room for ambiguity. You pushed her into a glass table.""

""You have judges on your payroll, Arthur!"" Victoria protested, her composure slipping into hysterical defiance. ""Call Judge Miller! Call the district attorney! We can claim it was an accident, that we were arguing and she lost her footing—""

""Miller retired six months ago,"" Arthur cut in sharply. ""And the new DA made his entire campaign on prosecuting corporate elite privilege. Do you have any conception of what this looks like? A billionaire’s daughter attempting to murder an unborn child out of romantic obsession? The press will skin you alive. My stock prices will crater by morning.""

Victoria stared at her father, the icy truth settling into her stomach. ""You... you aren't going to fix this?""

""I have already retained the best criminal defense team in the state,"" Arthur replied coldly. ""They will negotiate your surrender at the precinct tomorrow morning. You will plead not guilty, post bail, and then you will disappear to the clinic in Zurich until the trial.""

""Zurich? You're exiling me?""

""I am trying to keep you out of a maximum-security penitentiary!"" Arthur slammed his palm onto the desk, the first display of real emotion breaking his aristocratic facade. ""You fool! You threw away our leverage, our name, our dignity—over a man who never loved you! Marcus Sterling was a business transaction, and you turned him into your personal god!""

The doorbell chimed in the far foyer, heavy and deliberate.

Arthur’s intercom buzzed. His assistant’s voice sounded tense: ""Mr. Vance, Detective Lawson and two uniform officers are at the gate. They have an arrest warrant.""

May you like

Victoria dropped the glass. It didn't shatter on the thick Persian rug; it simply thudded softly, spilling alcohol into the wool fibers. She looked toward her father with wide, terrified eyes. ""Daddy, don't let them take me. Please.""

Arthur didn't look at her. He pressed the intercom button. ""Let them in.""
