Chapter 6 - The Weight of Justice

""Elena?"" Marcus looked at her, surprised by her silence. ""You aren't actually considering this?""

""I’m considering what it means,"" she said softly.

""It means letting a monster buy her way out of consequence!"" Marcus's voice rose, though he immediately checked himself, mindful of her blood pressure monitor. ""Elena, if you had fallen an inch to the left, the glass would have severed your femoral artery. You could have bled out in three minutes. Our baby could have died in that room. Victoria deserves every year of prison the law allows.""

""She does,"" Elena agreed. ""The law demands accountability, Marcus. I will not sign a letter that lies to the court. I won't say she didn't hurt us, and I won't ask for her to walk away as if this were an innocent mistake.""

Detective Lawson nodded slowly, keeping his professional neutrality. ""Then I will inform the prosecutor to proceed with the grand jury indictment as planned.""

""Tell them to proceed,"" Elena said firmly. Then, she looked at Marcus, her eyes steady. ""Marcus, refuse the money. Every single dollar of it.""

""Of course I will,"" Marcus said. ""I would never touch Arthur Vance’s blood money.""

""No,"" Elena continued. ""Tell them we refuse the settlement, but not because we want revenge. Tell them we refuse it because my child's life does not have a price tag. And tell Arthur Vance that if he truly wishes to make amends, he will step back and allow his daughter to face the reality of what she has become.""

Lawson closed the folder, a look of profound respect crossing his weathered face. ""Understood, Mrs. Sterling. We go to court.""

After the detective left, Marcus sat back down on the edge of the bed, running his hands through his hair. The tension in his shoulders was palpable, coiled like steel wire.

""I don't know how you do it,"" he muttered. ""I want to ruin them, Elena. I want to see Vance Group dismantled. I want Victoria to understand the terror you felt when you were lying on that floor.""

Elena reached out, her small hand covering his clenched fist. ""Marcus, look at your hands.""

He looked down. His knuckles were white with tension.

""Hate is like holding a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else,"" she quoted quietly. ""You are the one who gets burned. If we build our daughter's nursery on the foundation of vengeance, we bring Victoria into this home every day. We let her dictate our thoughts, our priorities, our peace. She has taken enough from us. I will not give her our future.""

Marcus closed his eyes, leaning his forehead against her uninjured arm. The relentless knot in his chest began to loosen, unraveling strand by strand beneath the quiet authority of her grace.

At 2:00 AM that night, the monitors suddenly shifted. The low, steady rhythm broke into rapid, erratic spikes. Elena gasped, her hands flying to her abdomen as a sharp, shearing pain seized her pelvis.

Marcus leaped from the chair. ""Elena?""

""Marcus..."" her voice was tight, breathless with agony. ""It’s time. She’s coming.""
