Chapter 7 - Thirty-Two Weeks

The room transformed into an organized tempest. Dr. Chen arrived within three minutes, accompanied by the neonatal intensive care team. The gentle blue curtains were pulled back, bright surgical lamps illuminated the bed, and the air was filled with the rapid-fire jargon of an emergent delivery.

""The abruption is expanding,"" Dr. Chen said after a brief examination, his calm exterior maintaining absolute control. ""The placenta is failing. We can't wait any longer. Prepare the OR for an emergency cesarean section immediately!""

""Marcus!"" Elena cried out as the orderlies unlocked the wheels of her bed, rushing her toward the double doors.

""I’m here! I’m right behind you!"" Marcus ran alongside the gurney, his sneakers squeaking against the linoleum. He was shoved into a sterile gown, a paper mask, and a cap by a surgical nurse who moved with the speed of an athlete.

The operating room was blindingly white and freezing cold. The scent of iodine filled the air. Marcus was guided to a stool beside Elena’s head, behind the blue surgical drape that shielded their view of her abdomen. Elena was shaking uncontrollably, a combination of adrenaline and spinal anesthesia. Her lips were blue-tinged, her eyes searching desperately for his.

""Look at me, Elena,"" Marcus repeated the words from three weeks ago, but this time there was no anger in his voice, only desperate, pleading devotion. He took her trembling hand between both of his. ""Look at my eyes. We are going to meet our daughter. Hear me? We’re meeting Grace.""

""I’m scared, Marcus,"" she sobbed softly. ""It’s too early. Thirty-two weeks is too early.""

""She’s strong. She’s survived a fall that would have broken anyone else. She has your spirit,"" he told her, tears finally spilling over his own lashes, dampening the sterile paper mask. ""Hold on to me.""

The surgeons worked with ruthless precision. Marcus could hear the metallic clatter of clamps, the muffled hum of suction, the clipped confirmations between Dr. Chen and the surgical assist. Every second felt stretched across an eternity of dread.

Then, at 2:44 AM, a sound cut through the sterile chamber.

It wasn't a roar; it was a thin, reedy wail, like the cry of a newborn sparrow fighting against a winter wind.

Waah... waah...

Marcus froze. Elena gasped, her tears halting as she turned her ear toward the sound.

""Time of birth: 02:44,"" Dr. Chen announced, his voice carrying a warmth that melted the clinical chill of the room. ""We have a girl.""

The neonatal team swarmed the warming table. Marcus stood slightly, his heart hammering against his ribs, watching through the glass partition. She was tiny—barely four pounds, her skin translucent pink, her tiny ribs rising and falling with desperate effort. But her limbs were moving, her fists clenched against the bright light, her little voice crying out with fierce, undeniable defiance.

""She’s breathing on her own,"" the neonatologist called out, a smile evident behind his mask. ""Apgar score is seven. She’ll need the NICU for CPAP support and temperature regulation, but she is a fighter, Mr. Sterling.""

A nurse wrapped Grace in a sterile blanket and brought her briefly to Elena’s face. Elena brushed her cracked lips against the infant's downy forehead.

""Welcome, Grace,"" Elena whispered, her face glowing with a joy so profound it seemed to banish every shadow of the past month. ""You're safe now.""
