Chapter 8 - In the Valley of the Glass Incubator

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit was a landscape of quiet vigilance. Rows of incubators—sleek, plastic boxes humming with life-support systems—glowed softly in the dimmed room. It looked like a garden of glass, where the most delicate flowers in the world were nurtured against the frost.
Marcus stood beside incubator 14, his hand inserted through the circular silicone portal. His broad forefinger was completely enclosed by Grace’s tiny, translucent hand. Her grip was surprisingly firm. A tiny nasal cannula delivered oxygen to her lungs, and leads crossed her chest, but her vital signs on the overhead monitor remained steady and rhythmic.
Behind him, Elena sat in a wheelchair, her post-operative pain managed, her gaze fixed entirely on their child.
""She has your stubborn chin,"" Elena murmured softly.
""No,"" Marcus smiled, his voice barely above a whisper. ""That chin belongs entirely to her mother. That’s the chin of someone who refuses to give up.""
Across the country, the wheels of justice were turning with indifferent momentum. The grand jury had returned an indictment on all counts against Victoria Vance. Arthur Vance’s public relations empire had failed to quell the outrage; leaked footage from the building lobby had found its way onto local news networks, showing Victoria fleeing the scene while Elena lay injured. The contrast was too stark, the cruelty too naked for high-priced publicists to spin.
Marcus’s phone buzzed in his pocket. He withdrew his finger from the incubator, stepped toward the exit of the NICU, and answered.
""Sterling.""
""Marcus. It’s Frank Harrison."" It was the chief prosecutor assigned to the case. His voice sounded weary but victorious. ""Arthur Vance’s legal team just threw in the towel. Victoria has agreed to an open plea.""
Marcus leaned against the hallway wall. ""What does that mean?""
""It means no trial. She pleads guilty to assault in the first degree with a deadly weapon—they classified the shattered glass as a proximate hazard resulting from the shove. The recommended sentencing is six to eight years at the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility. The judge has agreed to deny any further bail requests. Sentencing is set for Friday.""
Marcus waited for the triumphant surge of vindication. He waited for the cold satisfaction that he had spent weeks cultivating, the feeling that the woman who had terrorized his family was finally being crushed beneath the wheels of retribution.
Instead, all he felt was an overwhelming, hollow quiet.
""Thank you, Frank,"" Marcus said simply. ""We’ll be there.""
He walked back into the NICU. Elena looked up at him, reading the change in his posture immediately.
""It’s over?"" she asked.
""She took the plea,"" Marcus said, kneeling beside her wheelchair. ""Six to eight years. She goes to state prison on Friday.""
May you like
Elena didn't cheer. She closed her eyes, letting out a long, slow breath that seemed to carry away the last traces of the lingering nightmare. She reached out, resting her hand on Grace’s incubator.
""Then let justice have its room,"" Elena said, ""and let us have ours.""
