Chapter 13 - The Descent into Black

The enclosed brick corridor amplified the gunfire into a concussive shockwave that tore through Clara’s eardrums. Elena fired three deliberate rounds, hitting the lead mercenary squarely in the tactical vest, staggering him backward into the deep water. Clara dove to her knees, submerged up to her shoulders in the icy runoff, scrambling desperately against the mud and debris to put distance between herself and the crossfire.

Mark thrashing wildly in the water, screaming curses as he searched blindly for the submerged flash drive, completely consumed by the ruin of his empire. A mercenary lunged past him, reaching for Clara’s hair, but Elena intercepted him, driving her elbow into the man’s throat and sending him crashing into the concrete wall.

""Run, Clara! To the floodgates!"" Elena yelled, her voice raw as she traded blows with the second operative in the darkness.

Clara scrambled to her feet, water pouring from her soaked clothes, and bolted toward the faint iron grate that marked the river discharge point fifty yards ahead. The scent of fresh river air cut through the stagnant tunnel fumes. Behind her, she heard a sickening wet sound, followed by Mark's unmistakable, agonized howl. She turned back for a split second to see Mark collapsing into the water, clutching his chest, while the remaining mercenary raised his assault rifle, aiming directly at Clara’s back as she reached the rusted grate.
