Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Rust

Clara slowly reached inside her coat, feeling the cold, rectangular edge of the encrypted flash drive nestled deep in her lining. She had grabbed it in a split-second panic this morning, knowing it was the only leverage that could keep Mark from hunting her down and burying her where no one would ever look. She hadn't realized its contents extended far beyond petty tax fraud and money laundering.

""Come out into the light, Clara,"" the man urged, taking deliberate steps down the iron spiral staircase. ""The client wants the drive intact. You, however, are entirely expendable.""

Her mind raced through survival instincts forged through years of living with an unpredictable monster. If you run in a straight line, they shoot. If you plead, they push harder. She spotted an old industrial fuse box mounted on the pillar just inches from her right arm. The heavy lever was rusted in the 'off' position, but thick, severed copper cables dangled from its base over a pool of stagnant rainwater on the cracked concrete floor. With a silent prayer, Clara lunged, throwing her entire body weight against the heavy iron lever, pulling it down with a deafening screech of grinding metal.

Sparks showered violently through the air as high-voltage currents screamed to life, hitting the flooded floor with a blinding explosion of white light and crackling heat. The gunman fired reflexively, the bullet chipping concrete inches from Clara's ear, but the blinding flash disoriented him completely. Clara turned and sprinted blindly toward the loading dock exit, throwing open the rusted fire door just as a heavy hand grabbed the hood of her jacket and hauled her backward.
