Chapter 15 - The River Takes Everything

Clara looked down at the tiny piece of plastic and metal resting in her trembling, mud-caked hand. This small object had cost lives, ruined families, and nearly sealed her inside an eternal prison. It held hundreds of millions of dollars, dirty secrets of powerful men, and enough leverage to start a war. But leverage was just another chain. Power was just another version of Mark's raised fist.

She looked up at Elena, whose eyes were tired, cynical, and waiting for the greed that corrupted everyone to take hold. Clara slowly closed her fingers around the drive, walked to the water's edge, and drew back her arm.

""Wait,"" Elena said softly, though there was no command in her voice, only wonder. ""You could buy a whole new life with that. Disappear to the other side of the world.""

""I don't want a purchased life,"" Clara said. Her voice was steady, calm, and free. ""I want my own.""

With a smooth, unhesitating motion, Clara hurled the flash drive far out into the deep, churning currents of the river. It sliced through the grey water without a splash and sank immediately into the silt and darkness below, lost forever to the depths.

The morning sun finally broke through the heavy autumn clouds, casting a brilliant golden light across the surface of the river. Clara wiped the dried tears and grime from her face, feeling the warmth of the sun on her skin for what felt like the first time in years.

Beside her, Elena let out a long, incredulous laugh, shaking her head as she tossed the hunting knife into the mud.

""Where will you go?"" Elena asked quietly.

May you like

Clara turned away from the river, looking toward the open road stretching beyond the rail yards, her shoulders squared, her chin high.

""Anywhere I choose,"" Clara said, taking her first real step forward. But as they reached the edge of the paved highway, a sleek black town car pulled quietly up to the curb, its tinted rear window sliding down to reveal a smiling elderly man holding a pristine copy of Clara's forged birth certificate."
