Chapter 4 - The Shadow in the Dust

Clara froze, pressing her back against a rusted steel pillar, holding her breath until her lungs burned. Dust motes drifted lazily through the broken skylights, illuminated by narrow shafts of midday sun. Above her, the slow, rhythmic footsteps stopped. Whoever was up there was listening, calculating her position with terrifying patience.

""You always were predictable, Clara,"" a low voice echoed down from the metal mezzanine.

It wasn't Mark. The voice was smooth, devoid of Mark's unhinged fury, laced instead with cold, clinical authority. A tall man stepped into the light at the edge of the catwalk, dressed in a tailored charcoal coat that looked utterly out of place amidst the grime and rust. In his right hand, he held a sleek black pistol pointed casually toward the floor. Clara shrank further into the shadow of the pillar, her fingers searching the ground for anything—a pipe, a brick, a sliver of broken glass.

""Mark didn't hire me, if that’s what you're thinking,"" the stranger continued, his voice dropping into a conversational tone that terrified her far more than screaming ever could. ""Mark is a brute. A blunt instrument. He thinks this is about a broken marriage. But we both know why you really packed that specific USB drive from his study safe, don't you?"" Clara’s blood turned to ice. She hadn't just fled an abusive husband; she had taken the black-and-silver ledger drive containing the real reason Mark’s business had flourished while rival firms went bankrupt overnight.
