Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary of Noise

The warning felt like a bucket of ice water poured over Clara’s spine. Exit 14 led directly into the decaying industrial district, a sprawling maze of abandoned warehouses and rusted shipping containers bordering the old river canal. Trusting a cryptic text from an unknown entity went against every instinct she possessed, yet driving blind into Mark's reach seemed far worse. If Mark had placed trackers in her car, the highway was a straight path to capture.

Gripping the wheel, she violently veered across two lanes of traffic just as the exit ramp loomed, the tires screeching against the asphalt. The dark sedan behind her attempted to follow, but an articulated eighteen-wheeler cut across the lane, cutting off the pursuer’s path and forcing it forward into the main highway lanes. Clara exhaled a trembling breath, but there was no time to celebrate. She descended the ramp into the desolate warehouse park, where gray concrete walls and towering chain-link fences blocked the midday sun.

Her phone buzzed once more: Ditch the car behind Warehouse 9. He has the GPS tag under the rear bumper. Clara slammed the brakes inside an overgrown alleyway behind the crumbling structure. She abandoned the vehicle, taking only her purse and the burner phone she had purchased weeks ago. Slipping through a jagged tear in the fence, she ran blindly into the shadowed corridors of an abandoned textile factory. Footsteps echoed from the concrete floor above her, followed by the metallic click of a chambering round.
