Chapter 11 - The Sub-Basement

The entrance to Chiron Facility 4-B was concealed beneath an inactive industrial drainage reservoir, deep within the foundations of the municipal water authority. As Julian shoved the heavy iron hatch aside, the smell of damp earth was instantly replaced by the sterile, pressurized scent of HEPA-filtered cleanrooms and preserved electronics.

Emergency backup lighting flickered on automatically as their boots hit the reinforced polymer flooring. Julian dragged Mara onto a stainless-steel examination table in the primary anteroom, quickly securing two medical clamps to the bleeder in her shoulder before turning his attention to the central terminal console.

The facility had been preserved perfectly in time, frozen on the exact day Julian had fled seven years earlier. Coffee mugs with dried rings sat beside rows of advanced biometric centrifuges and holographic sequencing bays.

In the center of the room sat the main terminal: a circular titanium console featuring an integrated retinal scanner and a biological sample interface.

""Julian,"" Mara breathed from the gurney, her skin turning an ashen gray as blood loss took its toll. ""Fifteen minutes. The satellite link is already locking onto the launch silos.""

Julian placed Leo on a stool beside the console. ""Leo, stay right here. Look at this screen, buddy. Don't look away from me.""

Julian stepped up to the optical column, leaning down until his right eye aligned with the circular red laser aperture.

SCANNING RETINAL PATTERN... the automated system chimed in a cold, synthesized voice.

A crimson beam pulsed against Julian's cornea. Julian held his eyelid steady, ignoring the searing burn of the optical pulse.

PATTERN IDENTIFIED: VANCE, JULIAN. SECURITY CLEARANCE: LEVEL OMEGA. WELCOME BACK, DIRECTOR.

ACTIVE THREAT SEQUENCE DETECTED. TIME TO SILO DISCHARGE: 12 MINUTES, 43 SECONDS. ENTER ABORT CIPHER.

""It wants the cipher,"" Julian muttered, his fingers hovering over the glass capacitive keyboard. ""Mara, what was the master override phrase? Did I leave a text string?""

""No,"" Mara whispered, her eyes fluttering as her consciousness slipped. ""You didn't leave a string... you said a string could be stolen... you said the key... had to be living...""

Julian turned to Leo. The boy was looking at the glowing circular interface on the console, tilting his head as if listening to a distant melody only he could hear.

""Daddy,"" Leo said softly, pointing his small index finger at the circular port beneath the scanner. ""The box is singing the song you used to whistle.""
