Chapter 13 - Breached Perimeter

VOICE PATTERN CORRELATION: 94%... 97%... 99%...
DUAL-FACTOR BIOMETRIC CONFIRMED. OVERRIDE SEQUENCE INITIATED.
ABORT PROTOCOL ENGAGED. CANCELLING SILO COMMENCEMENT...
The flashing red emergency indicators across the main display abruptly switched to a calm, steady amber. On the telemetry map, the three launch silos in North Dakota transitioned from active pre-ignition back to secure standby status.
COUNTDOWN HALTED AT: 03 MINUTES, 14 SECONDS.
Julian let out a shuddering breath, pulling Leo into an agonizingly tight embrace. ""We did it, Leo. We did it.""
The heavy hydraulic blast doors at the rear of the laboratory buckled with a violent screech of tearing steel. A shaped thermite charge flared through the seam, molten metal showering across the polymer floor.
Julian spun, grabbing Mara off the examination gurney and dragging her behind the heavy central server array just as the blast doors collapsed inward.
Through the white smoke, four operatives in charcoal-black tactical gear moved into the room with military precision. Behind them walked a tall, immaculate figure in a tailored charcoal overcoat, entirely unbothered by the toxic fumes drifting through the shattered entrance.
It was Director Christian Vance—Julian's older brother, and the chief architect of the Directorate's domestic intelligence matrix.
""You always were the sentimental one, Julian,"" Christian said, his calm, aristocratic voice cutting through the hiss of extinguishing thermite. He held an ivory-handled revolver pointed loosely at the floor. ""You had the power to reshape the geopolitical hierarchy of the entire western hemisphere, and you hid it inside a baby's ear canal.""
Julian stepped out from behind the server rack, raising his hands slowly, keeping his body positioned squarely between Christian and where Leo was hiding beside Mara.
""The strike sequence is aborted, Christian,"" Julian said, his voice deadly level. ""The silos are locked down. The Chiron archive is localized to this room. There's nothing left for you to leverage.""
Christian smiled faintly, taking a slow step forward. ""You misunderstand the objective, little brother. I didn't want the missiles to launch. I wanted you to enter the abort code.""

Julian's blood turned to liquid nitrogen. ""What did you say?""
""The abort protocol doesn't delete the archive,"" Christian said, gesturing toward the console with his gun. ""It uncompresses it. By unlocking the master sequence, you just transferred the entire global defense backdoor directly into my private server array. Thank you, Julian. You finally finished your work.""
