Chapter 7 - The Blind Spot

Julian stared at the green terminal display in sheer disbelief. The code rushing past the screen was not an archive of scientific data. It was an automated targeting sequence, tied into the continental early-warning missile network.
""You told me this was a defensive cipher,"" Julian said, his voice dropping into a dangerous whisper as he looked up at Mara. ""This is an offensive strike key. It's an automated launch authorization.""
Mara took a step back, her pistol still held low at her side, her face pale in the faint screen light. ""It was never meant to launch, Julian. It was the deterrent. The Aegis Network was built to ensure that if our division was ever compromised or liquidated, the entire automated defense apparatus would turn back on the architects. The code you built holds the coordinates for every black-site facility operated by the Directorate—including the command bunker in D.C.""
""And if that timer hits zero?""
""It initiates a spoofed launch command to three subterranean missile silos in North Dakota. The missiles won't carry warheads, but they will breach civilian airspace. The automated counter-strike protocols will execute across every major superpower within minutes. It's a Doomsday device, Julian.""
Leo reached up, his small fingers brushing Julian’s cheek. ""Daddy, the noise stopped, but the lights are loud.""
Julian swallowed the bile rising in his throat. He gathered Leo into his arms, feeling the terrifying fragile warmth of the child who held the fate of millions encoded in his synapses. ""We need to get to an air-gapped terminal. Somewhere with an independent power supply that isn't tied into municipal infrastructure.""
""There is an old listening post six miles from here,"" Mara said, looking toward the end of the maintenance tunnel. ""An abandoned cold-war bunker beneath the municipal water treatment plant. It was part of the original Chiron testing perimeter before they decommissioned the facility.""
Before Julian could answer, the concrete floor above them shuddered violently. Dust rained down from the ceiling as the heavy steel ventilation grates thirty yards behind them bowed inward. The sound of pressurized hydraulic cutting torches hissed through the darkness.

""They brought heavy breaching gear,"" Julian said, checking the magazine of the captured submachine gun. ""They aren't trying to capture us anymore. They know the timer has started.""
Mara turned toward the tunnel exit, racking her slide. ""They don't need Leo alive if the timer runs out. If the strike triggers, the Directorate can blame the launch on a foreign entity and seize emergency control of the government. We have fifty-four minutes to cross the city.""
