Chapter 8 - The Surface War

They emerged from the sewer access hatch into an overgrown drainage culvert bordering the industrial rail yard. The night sky above the city was no longer dark; it was crisscrossed by sweeping military searchlights mounted on heavy transport helicopters. The rumble of armored personnel carriers vibrated through the damp asphalt.
Julian pulled Leo beneath the shadow of a rusted freight car, keeping the child shielded behind his back. The rain was beginning to fall now, a cold, persistent drizzle that slicks the rails and chilled Leo’s shivering frame.
""We need a vehicle,"" Julian whispered, peering through the gap between two rusted boxcars. ""The rail yard is surrounded. Look at the perimeter fences.""
Along the chain-link perimeter, black utility trucks without insignia were setting up portable microwave sensor arrays. Men in sterile gray tactical suits—not military, but private contractors from the Directorate—were systematically checking every passing freight vehicle.
""They're using bio-thermal scanners,"" Mara noted, pointing toward a tripod-mounted sensor sweeping across the rail lines. ""Leo’s body temperature is still elevated from the neural discharge. The scanner will pick him up at three hundred yards.""
Julian looked down at the boy. Leo's breathing had become shallow again, his skin clammy. The strain of the biological transmission was causing acute hypothermic shock. ""I need an ice bath or chemical cooling packs. If his core temperature doesn't stabilize, his brain will swell.""
""We don't have time for a hospital run, Julian!""
""I am a doctor, Mara! If his brain herniates, the cipher dies, the missiles launch, and my son is dead anyway! We hit the rail depot's maintenance office. They keep emergency refrigerated medical kits for industrial chemical burns.""
Mara looked at the heavily guarded perimeter, then at the child clinging to Julian's neck. Her jaw hardened. ""I'll create a diversion at the western gate. Draw the thermal sweep toward the highway.""
""Mara, that's suicide,"" Julian said, grabbing her forearm. ""They have gunships.""

She reached out, her fingers lingering gently on Leo’s forehead for a split second, brushing away a strand of damp blonde hair. ""Keep him safe, Julian. You designed this cage. Now find the key to open it.""
Without another word, she sprinted into the shadow of the rail cars, vanishing toward the outer perimeter. Thirty seconds later, the sharp, rapid crack of an assault rifle echoed across the yard, followed immediately by the thunderous roar of an exploding fuel storage tank.
