Chapter 6 - The Frequency Within

Leo's jaw locked as his vocal cords produced a continuous, undulating oscillation. It was neither human speech nor animal distress; it sounded precisely like an analog frequency carrier wave modulating across an encrypted band.

""Leo! Look at me!"" Julian dropped to his knees, laying the boy flat on a dry section of the concrete tunnel floor. He pulled out his penlight, checking Leo's pupils. Both were dilated to maximum, unresponsive to light. The boy's pulse was bounding at 140 beats per minute.

""It's happening,"" Mara knelt beside them, her hands frantically checking Leo's neck for arterial swelling. ""The master archive is syncing with the external grid. When the device was removed, the biological barrier dissolved. His brain is trying to output the stored signal through his vocal cords.""

""He'll suffer an ischemic stroke if this continues!"" Julian reached into his medical kit, his hands moving with frantic precision. He withdrew an ampoule of diazepam and a clean syringe. ""I have to sedate him to break the neural loop.""

""If you sedate him now, the transmission will terminate mid-handshake,"" Mara grabbed Julian's wrist, her eyes blazing with desperate urgency. ""The protocol interprets an interrupted sequence as a physical intrusion. It will trigger an automatic neural wipe! You built that safeguard, Julian! Do you understand? It will erase his mind!""

Julian froze, the needle hovering inches above Leo's arm. The terrible weight of his forgotten past crashed down upon him. He had designed a security protocol so ruthless, so uncompromising, that it treated a child's living consciousness as disposable hardware.

""Then what do we do?"" Julian yelled over the rising pitch of the frequency coming from Leo's mouth. ""We can't let him cook his brain!""

""We complete the handshake,"" Mara said, reaching into her pocket and pulling out an old satellite uplink receiver with a stripped coax cable. ""We give the archive an external receiver. Plug the cable directly into the cylinder you pulled from his ear. It acts as an acoustic bridge.""

Julian snatched the rolled polymer cylinder from his pocket. The fine copper wires were still trailing from its base like the legs of an insect. With steady fingers, he twisted the bare copper strands around the raw terminal of the uplink receiver.

The moment the final wire touched the contact, the piercing hum in Leo's throat snapped off. The boy gasped, drawing in a ragged lungful of air as his eyes focused once more on Julian's face.

Simultaneously, the small green LCD screen of the satellite receiver flared to life, streaming cascading lines of alphanumeric code at impossible speed. At the top of the terminal, a flashing prompt appeared:

CARRIER SYNCHRONIZED. RECIPIENT NODE IDENTIFIED: GLOBAL STRIKE COMMAND. TARGET LOCK: WASHINGTON, D.C. DETONATION TIMER: 59 MINUTES.
