Chapter 10 - The Unlikely Guardian

The spotlight swept over the top of the boulder, illuminating the dripping pine needles just inches above Elena’s head. She held Maya so tightly she feared she might crush the child’s ribs, pressing her palm gently over Maya's mouth to prevent the slightest whimper. Elena closed her eyes, praying to any power listening that the light would move on.

The truck engine idled, a low, mechanical growl echoing off the quarry walls. Then, the engine was cut, plunging the clearing into a terrifying stillness broken only by the wind through the pines and the heavy, approaching crunch of work boots on gravel.

Elena’s heart hammered against her chest. She had no weapon, no energy left to run. If this was one of Hector’s scouts, this was where her story ended. She looked down at Maya, kissing her damp forehead, resigning herself to fight with her bare hands until her last breath.

The footsteps stopped on the other side of the rock. A shadow fell over them.

""Elena?"" a gravelly, aged voice called out softly. It wasn't the refined sneer of Hector, nor the aggressive bark of a cartel thug. It was a voice cracked with age, exhaustion, and decades of regret.

Elena slowly looked up. Standing above her was an old man in a threadbare flannel jacket and grease-stained canvas pants. He leaned heavily on a wooden cane, his silver hair unkempt, his face weathered by years of sorrow. But it was his eyes—deep, familiar hazel eyes—that made the breath catch in Elena’s throat.

""Papa?"" Elena whispered, unable to believe her senses. ""Papa, is that you?""

Arthur Vargas fell to his knees in the gravel, heedless of the sharp stones, his trembling arms wrapping around his daughter and granddaughter. ""My girl... my sweet girl,"" the old man wept, his voice breaking into ragged sobs against her shoulder. ""I thought... they told me you were dead. Marco told me you died three years ago.""

""Julian found your ledger,"" Elena cried, weeping openly as the reality crashed over her. ""He said you were locked away in the north.""

""Julian got me out two days ago,"" Arthur explained, his voice urgent as he pulled back to look at her battered face and swollen belly. ""He hid me at the quarry depot. He told me if anything went wrong at the cabin, to wait here with the transport truck. Where is he, Elena? Where is Julian?""

Elena could only look back up toward the forested ridge, where the dark silhouette of the cabin stood invisible beneath the gray clouds. Arthur understood instantly. His jaw tightened, a spark of the fierce shipping magnate he once was returning to his faded eyes.

""We have to go, now,"" Arthur said, helping her toward the truck. ""Julian gave us a chance. We cannot waste it.""
