Chapter 4 - The Safehouse in the Pines

Elena’s heart slammed against her ribs like a caged bird. She reached for the driver's seat, preparing to throw the car into reverse, when the driver's door suddenly swung open. She raised her hands in terror, but it was Julian. His face was streaked with blood and rain, his trench coat torn at the shoulder, but his hands were steady as he slid behind the steering wheel and locked all doors.
""Keep your heads down!"" Julian barked.
He didn't attempt to turn around. Instead, he slammed the gear into reverse, stomping on the accelerator. The tires squealed against the slick gravel, throwing up mud and stones as the sedan rocketed backward down the narrow access lane. The two SUVs surged forward in pursuit, their front bumpers bristling with reinforced steel guards.
Julian spun the wheel hard, executing a brutal reverse slide into a blind intersection that connected to the public highway. Metal scraped against concrete as they grazed a retaining wall, but the sedan held. He shifted into drive and floored it, merging seamlessly into a cluster of morning freight trucks just as the traffic light turned red behind them, trapping their pursuers behind a wall of eighteen-wheelers.
For twenty minutes, no one spoke. The only sounds inside the car were Maya’s rhythmic sniffling, Elena’s ragged breathing, and the monotonous slap of the windshield wipers.
""You're bleeding, Julian,"" Elena whispered, her voice trembling as she leaned between the front seats, offering him a tissue from the glove compartment.
Julian took it without taking his eyes off the road. ""It's nothing. Just a broken nose."" He glanced in the rearview mirror, meeting her hollow gaze. ""Did he hurt the baby? Are you having contractions?""
""Braxton Hicks, I think. But they're getting stronger,"" she said, resting both hands over her stomach. She looked down at Maya, who had finally fallen asleep from sheer exhaustion, curled into a ball on the seat. Elena swallowed hard, the chill in the air doing little to cool the fire burning in her mind. ""Julian... what did Marco mean back there? What did he mean about my father?""
Julian remained silent for several agonizing seconds, his jaw muscle ticking. He took an abrupt turn onto an unpaved logging road that wound deep into the coastal pine forest, far outside the city limits.
""Your father didn't drown in that boating accident, Elena,"" Julian finally confessed, his voice devoid of emotion. ""He disappeared because he found out what the Ruiz cartel was using the family shipping lines for. And Marco didn't marry you out of love. He married you to keep the Ruiz name tied to the Vargas maritime licenses.""

Elena stared at him, horror washing over her features. Before she could demand the rest of the truth, Julian pulled the car behind a dilapidated wooden cabin hidden under a dense canopy of fir trees.
""We're here,"" Julian said, shutting off the engine. ""Get inside. We only have three hours before they ping this vehicle's transponder.""
