Chapter 5 - The Ledger in the Floorboards

The cabin was cold, smelling of aged cedar, dry rot, and old paper. Julian quickly secured the blackout curtains while Elena settled Maya onto an old sofa, covering her with a wool blanket retrieved from a wooden chest. Elena’s bare feet were bandaged with gauze from Julian’s field kit, but the physical pain was insignificant compared to the psychological shock unspooling inside her.
Julian ignited a small kerosene heater, its yellow flame casting long, flickering shadows across the rough wooden walls. He pulled an insulated aluminum briefcase from beneath a loose floorboard in the corner of the room, setting it onto the battered pine table.
""Marco mentioned floorboards in your master closet,"" Julian said, opening the case with a heavy metallic snap. ""He didn't know I already found what was hidden there two weeks ago.""
Elena walked slowly toward the table, her hand resting protectively against the swell of her child. Inside the case lay a leather-bound notebook with yellowed pages, several encrypted flash drives, and a collection of faded architectural blueprints.
""This is my father’s handwriting,"" Elena gasped, her fingertips hovering over the embossed initials on the leather cover. She pulled the notebook closer, flipping through pages filled with meticulous maritime routes, docking schedules, and handwritten notes in Spanish detailing illicit cargo manifests. ""He knew. He knew Marco’s family was using the fleet.""
""He didn't just know; he was gathering evidence for the federal prosecutor,"" Julian said softly. ""The night your father disappeared, he was supposed to meet me at the marina. He never made it. Marco intercepted him. For four years, I couldn't prove it because Marco had bought off the entire maritime commission, including my former precinct captain.""
Elena’s knees buckled, and she leaned heavily against the table, a low cry of betrayal escaping her lips. ""I lived with him. I slept in the same bed with the man who murdered my father. And now... I’m carrying his son.""
""Marco didn't murder him, Elena,"" Julian said, his eyes darkening with an intensity she had never seen in him before.
Elena looked up, her breath catching in her throat. ""What are you talking about?""
May you like
""Your father is alive,"" Julian said flatly. ""He’s been held in a private medical facility near the northern border, kept sedated under an alias so Marco could use his biometric signatures to authorize international cargo shipments. That’s why Marco couldn’t let you leave. The day you turn thirty-four—next Tuesday—the estate transfers entirely to you, and your father’s signatures become void.""
Elena swayed on her feet, the room spinning violently around her. Before Julian could reach out to steady her, a high-pitched electronic hum resonated from inside the aluminum briefcase. Julian looked down, his eyes widening in horror as a red LED indicator on one of the encrypted flash drives began blinking rapidly.
