Chapter 12 - The Reckoning at the Quarry

Hector never pulled the trigger. Before his finger could complete the squeeze, the roar of an approaching diesel engine shattered the quiet of the woods. A heavy dump truck from the nearby quarry crashed directly through the cabin’s remaining front wall, timber, drywall, and glass exploding inward like a detonated bomb.

Hector was thrown backward by the collapsing roof beams, his revolver spinning wildly across the floor. The driver of the truck—an old, gray-haired man with rage etched into every wrinkle of his face—slammed the heavy vehicle into reverse, backing out of the wreckage just enough to clear the cabin's shattered threshold.

Arthur Vargas kicked open the truck's dented door, holding an old double-barreled hunting shotgun retrieved from the quarry's maintenance office. ""Get away from him, Ruiz!"" the old man bellowed, his voice carrying the full thunder of a patriarch returned from the dead.

Hector scrambled out from beneath the debris, coughing on drywall dust, his hand frantically clawing across the floor for his dropped gun. He found the grip, rolled onto his back, and aimed upward at Arthur.

Arthur did not hesitate. He pulled both triggers simultaneously.

The deafening blast of double-ought buckshot tore through the floorboards at Hector’s feet, destroying his weapon hand and sending him screaming in agony as he recoiled against the burning kerosene heater. The heater tipped over, its fuel instantly igniting the dry, splintered cedar logs that now choked the room. Flames leaped upward toward the wooden ceiling rafters with terrifying speed.

""Arthur!"" Julian shouted, straining against the zip-ties binding him to the chair. ""The ties! Cut the ties!""

Arthur dropped the empty shotgun, rushed through the growing wall of fire, and pulled a utility knife from his belt, slicing through the thick plastic binding Julian’s wrists and ankles. Julian collapsed forward, his shattered knee unable to support his weight.

""Lean on me, son,"" Arthur grunted, hauling Julian’s arm over his frail shoulders. ""Elena is down at the quarry shed. The baby is coming now! We have to move!""

Julian glanced back through the swirling smoke and orange flames. Hector Ruiz was trapped beneath a fallen beam, the fire creeping rapidly across his cashmere coat, his screams of pain drowned out by the roaring inferno consuming the cabin.

Julian didn't look back again. Dragging his useless leg, supported by the man he had spent four years trying to save, Julian hauled himself out into the freezing forest air just as the cabin's roof collapsed inward in a blinding shower of sparks.
